Where I’m From
By: Denali Lathrop
I am from mountains, rivers, hills, and streams.
From colors dancing in the night sky when it is cold.
I am from writing, pictures, dreaming, dancing.
From laughter, hugs, groans, and grunts.
I am from a home with family and friends;
Love, kind words, teasing, sharing.
I am from pigs, dogs, turkeys, chickens, ducks,
Rabbits, bears, and moose.
I am from cold and darkness.
Snow, boots, gloves, hats, coats, scarves, and gloves.
I am from social awkwardness.
People walking down the street with heads down.
Not because they want to have their head down,
They are afraid people will judge them.
I am from hardships and trials.
Separation and solitude.
I am from diversity.
In speech, dress, attitude, actions.
I am from a great workplace.
Children to love and be loved by.
I am from chaos and confusion.
Love and kindness.
I am from eternal friendships.
Caring more for another than oneself.
I am from awkwardness,
Questioning insanity.
I am from notes and letters.
Love and heartbreak.
I am from decisions that change a lifetime
And a friendship.
I am from home -
The place that will forever be mine.
I am from a place that has more to it
Than can be seen.
But it is mine for now
And forever will stay
In my heart.
