June 2010

Last night changed my life. I met a man who I never want to forget. Before I met him I never realized how much our military sacrifices to keep us safe. Just listening to him speak inspired me. God bless our military and may all of us show our love and support to them.

Last night I met a 27 year old war veteran.
Hearing his story changed my life. I had never really talked personally with a war veteran, especially one that was disabled because of an accident(s) in Iraq and Afghanistan, and other places.
But hearing from this young man. I could feel the sincerity in his story. Because of his actions in the midst of his personal accident in Iraq almost 4 years ago he is now disabled. He is retired from the Army because they have deemed him medically disable to help them in any way. And this young man is only 27!
He risked his life for his fellow soldiers. While in the Army he was a combat medic. While in the field he was working on fellow soldiers and their wounds. And then he got hit. But he put his friends lives before his own. Because he didn't get evacced and get his wound looked at, he is now disabled.
He has a brain injury which can cause short-term memory loss and can make it hard for him to balance. He has to use a cane whenever he walks. He also has a slight scar from where some shrapnel was in his leg. While in the field and right after he was hit and the shrapnel was lodged into his leg, this man pulled the shrapnel out. And then went to help his friends.
This man is amazing. I could listen to him talk about his experiences, both about war and at home, for hours.
One thing I know for sure. This man has changed my life forever. And to think that my life has changed and I got to hear his story just because I brought him a popsicle and asked what he was doing here in Alaska.
